Protecting Tahoe’s Night Sky

Protecting Tahoe’s Night Sky

Some of Tahoe’s best views arrive after sunset. A clear mountain night can reveal a sky full of stars, and keeping that view starts with reducing the light we send into it.

Visit Truckee-Tahoe’s Keep It Dark initiative encourages the community to cut unnecessary light pollution. Caring for the mountain environment includes what happens after dark.

Why Dark Skies Matter

Natural darkness supports the mountain environment. Too much artificial light can disturb nocturnal wildlife and ecosystems, waste energy and make stars harder to see.

For a community so closely connected to the outdoors, protecting the night sky is another way to care for the place we enjoy.

Small Changes at Home

The goal is thoughtful outdoor lighting, not eliminating it. Where a light points and when it runs can make a difference.

Aim exterior fixtures downward, choose warmer bulbs, add timers or motion sensors, and switch lights off when they are not needed. These are practical ways to reduce stray light.

Around a home, those adjustments can also make evenings feel quieter and more natural, with the landscape remaining the focus.

Keep It Dark

Homeowners, businesses and visitors can all contribute. Visit Truckee-Tahoe’s Keep It Dark guide explains additional ways to limit light pollution and help preserve Tahoe’s dark skies.
